Project info

In 2015, I worked with teams at McGarrah Jessee and Whataburger to create and launch the Whataburger app. The initial app goal was to create a user-friendly loyalty program app that worked easily and reliably for both Whataburger employees and customers. Launch functionality consisted of an account system, menu, limited time offers system, loyalty program and mobile payment system. For this phase, I was one of several UX/UI designers on the project.

In 2016, after the MVP of the app was succcesfully launched and tested in market, I joined to begin work on mobile ordering. For this phase, I co-located, working out of the client offices and helped design several test options for mobile ordering and customization.

In 2019, I came back on to help write a test plan, facilitate and synthesize user testing of a new feature to online ordering.

Mobile Payments

The goal for the mobile payments was to offer several payment options while retaining a clear and intuitive user flow. Users can set up payment, load funds onto their app, pay with gift cards and manage their preferences.

Ordering Flow & Customization

Unlimited customization is a unique hallmark to Whataburger and one of our user's biggest needs in online ordering. In order to better understand how customers will customize their orders, we created three different customization flows to user test.

User Testing

Whataburger continued to optimize their app and ordering over the years. In 2019 they wanted to get a better understanding of a new audience and reached out to McGarrah Jessee. I helped set up a usability lab where we could test and observe users. I was one of three moderators for testing and I lead real-time synthesis in the room with the client. We were able to find and fix several critical usability issues during test sessions, while also getting real-time feedback to better understand our audience’s needs.
